I dont really agree that violence on tv is the main cause of crime. People who commit crime have made the choice to do so and obviously have something within their nature that pushes them to that point. Blaming external factors is just a get out clause, like a child saying "he made me do it". I,like a large percentage of the nation watch violence on tv all the time and not once have i thought to go out and commit an act of crime. As to why violence is on tv... tv companies are in the business of making money and they are not going to do that with bland, "nice" tv. People want to watch something with passion, they want to see something that doesnt occur in their everyday life. This doesnt mean that violence is the best entertainment it just means that this is what people are choosing to watch and as long as there is an audience for it, it will continue to be there.
I've got to go to bed, but will try to remember to post a longer argument tomorrow. However, for now I would like to point out that I watch a lot of violent movies, but have never attacked anyone. There are many reasons for the increase in violence in our society - films and TV may influence a very small percentage of the population, but are an easy target for people who want something to blame. I suspect that other factors such as lack of parental discipline, and the prevalent "me" culture have far more to do with increased violence.
I'm with LeMarchand.....I have never once been moved to act violently regardless of what I watch. Are people who only watch romantic comedies and light hearted movies etc always in a good mood and full of joy and benevolence? No, of course not. People were violent in the days before telly etc...this is a very tenuous (and tiresome) argument that is often put forward (particularly in America) as some sort of reason/mitigating circumstance for the latest violent killings. This type of thign has long been said....many will remember 'outrage' over Grange Hill showing drugs use - the hysterical media tried to convince parents it would turn their little angels into drug addicted monsters. This proved to be entirely untrue. If people have violence in them, it will coem top the surface, regardles sof what external factors influence this. I do agree with LeMarchancd, parental care (or lack thereof) and, particularly in US, the ready availability of weapons, make our culture more violent today, not the tv we watch.
I remember watching a hell of a lot of WWF wrestling as a kid, and always fighting with my brother in a jokey way, used to joke with friends aswell, only this one guy would love to accidently on purpose hit you hard, then it all ends in tears. basically, some people enjoy doing bad things, so yes i do think violence being shown to the wrong person does make them do violent things. But at the same time, if they enjoy being that way inclined then inevitably they will have violent periods of there life
The victorian times were violent, with murders and muggings happening by the hour. They had not TV to encourage them!
