SATA and parallel drives

I have 2 parallel harddrives at the moment and know that my motherboard supports SATA. My "main" harddrive is on it's way out (making some horrid noises!) and I want to replace it - can I get an SATA and keep my second parallel drive, or do they both have to be the same technology? I will replace them both at some point ...

Cheers
