my jack rusell has developed a taste for slugs and snails he is 10 and this is the first year he has eaten them. is it a diet problem or what??? he doesn't seem to suffer any detrimental symptoms just the slime all around his mouth which he duly wipes on the carpet!!!

I am pretty sure this is quite dangerous as it can give your dog lungworm. Have you wormed your dog recently, if not I would do it asap - have a word with your vet - but you need a good wormer, not one of the ones from the pet shop - something like panacur which you can buy online quite cheaply.
Eating slugs and snails can cause your dog to contract Lungworm and Heartworm which can both be cleared by using Panacur.

Be very careful too of slug pellets which are highly poisonous.
