Q-plate

I've just bought a 1957 Unimog and it's on a q plate. The last owner bought it 6 years ago and it was already on the q plate - he doesn't know why. I know that the previous owner was a garage and had modified it to be a recovery truck - all this kit has since been removed.

It's looks completely original (if shabby), I alwasy thought a q-plate was issued if major parts of the vehicle were of a different age/source,

Anyone know what I need to do to get it re-registered on an age-related plate?

It was an ex-german-military vehicle, released in 1980 and imported to the UK.

Thanks,
JG

DVLA will always give a vehicle that they cannot determine the age of a "Q" plate, I don't think you can change them.
Toureman is right,as he says Q plates are for vehicles that cannot be determined to place, age and build and therefore unless you can prove where, when and how,it was built,it will allways be on that plate.
I thought Q Plates were for vehicle that had previously been a total write off?
A total write off is never put back on the road so will never need any number plates.

Interesting. Thanks guys.

But presumably, if I can trace the manufacture date from the chassis number through MB and I can show that the truck is restored to original condition using genuine parts then it will qualify for '57 plates?
No a vehicle cannot display a plate that gives the impression it is newer than the relevant plate for the date it was manufactured.

A 57 plate would suggest it was built in 2007.

If you can establish date of manufacture then you can only put a plate on it indicating that date. However this may be different if it's already been given a Q Plate.

Sorry, I meant a plate from 1957 not a XX 57 XXX plate!!

OK, the DVLA have confirmed that all I need to di get confirmation from Merceded Benz of when it was first built. So I'm going to send them the chassis number and cross my fingers...
