Problem recharging my iPod

Recently I got a replacement battery for my mini iPod as the original one which had lasted for almost two years had run down permanently. But I have had problems recharging my iPod since I got the new battery. I used to be able to recharge the iPod when it had the original battery by connecting the iPod to my computer whenever I was using it, and no matter how much power was left in, it would recharge it up to full power again easily and quickly. But now with the new battery, it won't let me recharge the iPod at all until it has completely used up its energy. If I plug it in to be recharged, instead of recharging it, it actually lets the battery run down until it has no charge at all left, and then I have to start all over again and replug it and then wait for it to charge, and it all takes much longer. What can I do? Should I buy a different new battery, and if so which manufacturer should I get it from? Thanks to anyone who can help.
