I have found that the processor in my computer is different to what i had thought, i believed that i was using an athlon 64 3200+ clawhammer due to my not being able to set it to it's 12*multiplier in the bios, i have been overclocking it as an 3200+ using the 10*multi. Looking at the model number confirms that is, in fact a 3700+ and should therefore use the 12*multi at 200 fsb. However when i set the multi to 12 it won't get past the bios and into windows, i have to change the multi to a max of 11.5 or overclock to reach it's 2.4ghz rated speed which has been causing instabilities. I'm using an asus k8n e se motherboard which is compatible with processors up to and including the 3700, the bios and windows also claim that i'm using an "amd engineering sample processor', can anyone kindly tell me what's going on and how i can get the processor to work at it's rated speed with the 12* multi?
Any help greatly appreciated :)

Can't you just set the BIOS to automatic?

You should only need to mess with multipliers if you want to clock the CPU.

If the BIOS is not detecting the CPU properly then there may well be an update available on the manufacturer's website.
I'd second that motion although the K8n Asus board isnt that old to be needing a bios upgrade, however its been known to happen before.

Also i wasnt aware that AMD used a FSB, i thought only Intel cpu's used this.

There must be something wrong because AMD athlon 64's are some of the most overclockable proccy;s around, have you tried to search around for jumper settings?? i might be punching above my weight here as you know a lot about this already, good luck
I have the Asus k8n-e motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor I also wanted to Overclock. After a Call to Asus I found that there is indeed a bios upgrade for it. I'm not saying the same is true for yours but give it a try.

Hi there, thanks to all who have answered so far, peanut did you get that bios upgrade yourself?
Apparently the the k8n4-e se uses the pheonix award bios, is the same true for yours? I haven't been able to find anywhere to upgrade the bios, from the asus website i can only upgrade the drivers. Have you found a place to upgrade the bios?
I could help you overclock if your having trouble no worries. I think for mine it could be the bios, still not coming any clser to resolving though.
sorry for the delay in responding. I called Asus and they walked me through the upgrade. I will restart and see what version I have and post back.
Im not sure how to tell if my bios is Phoenix or not but the version I have is 8.00.09 and According to Asus the latest version for yours is 1006.

I've overclocked mine before but I didn't trust that I did it right so I put it back. It could use a boost.
hey osj032 have a look HERE
Sorry for the typo in your name

Cheers for that peanut, downloading now and maybe it'll sort it! Do you wanna try an overclock? Have you dabbled with the bios much before? Tell me the processors name, err it's probably a newcastle, what ram you have (the speed eg pc3200) and i'll type you through it. It's really easy btw.

Amd Athlon 64 3400+ @2.4Ghz, 1 Gb DDR 400 (pc3200)ram, I do believe it is a newcastle.
Oh, and yes I played around with BIOS quite a bit when I first got the board. Tried overclocking before and put it back because I was not sure I did it right.
