Primary school teachers are too shy to sing in front of their class. Music is compulsory until the age of fourteen but teachers are not receiving enough training. It is reported that one in three primary school teachers have received no training in music and singing. What do you think? Is music within education a vital lesson that helps build a child's confidence and coordination? Or is it something that is not worth all the fuss? Would you be too shy to sing in front of a class full of six-year-olds?

they're also having doubts about the prospect of having to teach foreign languages to kids when they can't speak them themselves. Surely as a matter of principle teachers should receive full training in anything they're expected to pass on to classes?
As a student teaching assistant I spend some hours in the classroom and have attended a singing session and I couldn't hear the kids singing over the teacher she was so enthusiastic!! lol
I was a bit shy about singing in front of the kids but got really into it (once I remembered all the words!)

Agree with Jno, it should be part of their training if it's to be expected.
It may even put the kids off trying Karioke in future years if they have to listen to some teachers making a fool of themselves. Shyness may not come into it! Better to play a Carly Simon record Itzy Bitzy Spider or something similar and they can all join in.
whenever our teacher sang with us, the entire class, arsed around and imitated her every word - one day she made a huge mistake by adding a little flourish to the end of one word - we of course imitated this flourish at the end of every line.

it was a shambles

perhaps some teachers are afraid of this happening?
Too shy to sing in front of 6 year olds? Well that would depend on the song. If it was anything by Mariah Carey or Joss Stone I would rather remove my eyebrows with a blow-torch.

Singing should be natural and for enjoyment, not an embarrassing necessity. If teachers dont want to sing to their class bring in a singer who will, or play a CD they can all sing along to. How effective is a shy teacher in a class full of 6 yo?
