hi, i have the same problem but with inside walls, try using a variable speed drill. Start on the slowest speed and build up. Worked for me. Good luck
There are many types of wall construction and many types of drills, plugs and screws to choose from.
Let me know what type of material you are trying to drill and I can advise you as to the best action to take.

It is an inside wall, we tried last night by starting off slow with the drill. the hole seemed ok, but the put in the raw plug and started to tighten the screw and it just pulled out the raw plug, and made the hole big and crumbly! The wall is soft but then like solid after the crappy plaster. Cheers x
Hi again, sounds like you have an old style of breeze block, try filling the hole you already have with a liquid nails type product (GRIPFIL is very good), then push the wall plug into it and let it set, when its dry fix the screw into it in the normal way.
I would let it dry for a couple of days, not just touch dry.
If you are just trying to hang a picture I would try masonary nails, these are much stronger than normal nails and will enter a breeze block with ease.
Your drill bit should have a tip soldered onto the front of it (this is a masonary bit) standard wood or metal cutting drills will not do the job. Put your drill onto the hammer setting, this helps drive the drill bit into the wall.
Another tip is to put a small drill bit in first to give your larger drill bit a guide to follow.
Best of luck.

Just read your 8.28 reply again, from what you are saying it sounds like you are trying to fix just into the plaster, this will never work, you need to get into the brickwork behind the plaster to get a good fixing.
Use longer screws if you need to, they should go in at least the length of the wall plug. Drill your hole deeper than the wall plug is in length, this will allow the screw to go in deeper than the plug if your screw is slightly longer than you need, also, make sure the plug fits flush with the brick behind the plaster and not flush with the plaster.
Happy drilling.......
