Hello. My partner sent a letter to Natwest on the 21st of February 2007 asking for her bank charges to be paid back (over 2000). She heard nothing for nearly 3 weeks so she sent the next letter stating that the next step would be to take them to a small claims court unless they reply within 14 days. That letter was sent on the 14th of March 2007. Still she has heard nothing. Will the Natwest reply or will she have to apply to a small claims court?

I would imagine that they are inundated with these requests and probably have a backlog to deal with. It may be worth giving them a call to find out what the situation is.
If you dont hear anything after 14 days then issue a court claim.
I have a suggestion - run your bank accounts properly, dont defraud the bank by spending money you dont have, or attempting to spend money you don't have by setting up direct debits and standing orders you dont have the funds to cover and writing cheques that your ass can't cash and then you wont have all this "hassle" of waiting for a response from your bank.

All this blah blah about bank charges - if the banks charged what it cost them - ie about 50p - people would be bouncing your stuff left right and centre. The charges are high to act as a deterrent to people who can't be bothered to manage their finances correctly and - heaven forbid - for the bank to make a profit. Banks are not charitable organisations, they are businesses who are out to make money. Why shouldn't they be allowed to make money in the same way that companies like Tescos are?

What you people claiming your charges back now dont seem to realise is that the end of free banking in the UK is nigh - and for all of those who manage our finances correctly and dont try to defraud our banks by trying to spend money we dont have, we are going to be the real losers, penalised by you idiots thinking that they're going to win one over on the banks. They'll give the charges back with one hand but you can be sure that they'll take back with the other by charging everyone for basic banking facilities. Something to think about................

Daisy13, most people don`t defraud banks intentionally, you probably pay all your bills at the post office when you collect your pension
In this day and age where most peoples incomes are paid straight into the bank it is very easy to fall behind and get charged 30 by the bank just for them to tell you there were insufficiant funds in your account

And when the next month comes and they take the 30 out which makes another DD payment fail and they charge you again it has a snowball effect

And now that there is a chance to get some of this money back, who needs people like you?

JonRB, I am in the same position, it`s been 2 weeks now and I rang my bank and they said it was due to the high volume of letters and it will take between 4 and 8 weeks, I`m still going to threaten them with court action, they are just using delaying tactics, good luck
