I've been using some cleaning wipes I got from Virgin on my DVDs because a couple have started to skip, and they have left a powdery film over the DVD. How do I remove it without wrecking the disc?

Depends what the substance is, but get some isopropyl alcohol (the normal CD cleaning stuff you get from record shops), and a lint-free cloth, and clean it like that. It's good for cleaning anyway, and removes most things from the surface without damaging it.
Luke warm water with a little washing up liquid using a soft cloth. No circular motions (like on a record), just keep going in one direction.

Dry with another cloth (no tissues or kitchen paper as these can scratch).
It's usually recommended that you wipe from the centre of the disc to the outer edge, when cleaning.

In future why no try this method when the DVD start to slip - I took 4 into the local video shop for the same thing - he promply pulled out a tin of "MR. SHEEN" polish and lint free cloth and polished - one way only- not circular motion - and in 10 minutes as good as new!! Ive tried it since then and bingo it works every time!
i second 'mortartube'. The cd is read exactly the same as a record is, and you are advised to clean it from the centre outwards. Don't have a reason though
