Interesting, but heavy going. I'm not sure that it adds much to the solution of our present dilemma.
I shall stick with shock and see if this is confirmed by the link word.
I prefer stock (a prize)
Note that 24d can be either a stook or a shock according to OED which does tend to confuse with 28a.
By the way, when I was on the farm in the 1930s we called them "stooks" and there was only 8 sheaves per stook.

Chambers definitely give 'stook' as 'a group of sheaves set up in a field' (for 24d)
also
Chambers gives 'smock-race' (formerly) a race run by women or girls for the prize of a smock' which I shall use for 28a.
D'you think I am correct?
"Stook" and "Smock" definitely right. I've lifted too many of the former onto the haycart to forget them!!
