When is the best time to start a baby onto a heavier formula, we're currently using SMA Gold. Our baby is 6 weeks 5 days, is currently downing 7oz like there is no tomorrow, 2 hours later he's crying for a feed again although we try and stretch him out to 4 hours for each feed. but having 2 hours of constant crying is hard to listen to. It could be worse though, over the past week he has been sleeping through the night 11pm - 7pm. Any suggestions would be great

I had my little man on the next one up (Hungrier baby SMA) around this time. Its best to speak to you HV first but as mum you should know best. Although if he's sleeping through the night what more do you really want?

I actually gave little man a about a teaspoon, may be less of baby rice to settle him every now and then and that seemed to have worked. But its not for everyone and I wouldn't tell you to do it. HV would defo not advise

xx

your very lucky to have a baby who sleeps through at 6 weeks
my son had cow and gate plus it is suitable from birth as he was a very hungry baby and wanted a feed every 3 hours.
if he is drinking all the bottle try taking it up to 8oz as 7 oz might not be enough for him anymore
id agree with trying to take him up to 8ozs if youre sure its hunger making him cry and not colic or reflux.
he is obviously full in the eves or he wouldnt sleep so well through the night or it could just be a growth spurt making him want more during day.
I put my son on hungrier baby milk when he was that age but not for all of his feeds, i did it in stages because i knew that once he was the same on hungry milk my only option was to start to wean him early and i didnt want to do that. Saying that, I still started to wean at 15 weeks because of his hunger.
Babies go through growth spurts where they are very hungry for about a week at a time and put on loads of weight. It soon settles down again though. Get in touch with your health visitor who will be the best person to advise you on whether to change your formula. That is if your baby is still like this on Monday. He may well have settled down by then.
Have you tried giving him water between feeds? Maybe he's just thirsty. Saying that, we moved our little one onto 2nd stage formula at around 8 weeks..she's 16 weeks now and has 5 x 6oz feeds and a spoon of baby rice with her 5pm feed. She sleeps 10pm till 7am.
