British women are the fattest women in Europe a report has revealed. 23 per cent of women are clinically obese and men don't fare much better with 22.3 per cent of them being clinically obese. Experts say unless obesity is tackled now an entire generation will face many obesity related ailments such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Obesity is a very current issue in Britain, not only among adults but also with children. Why is this issue most prominent in Britain?

I am 'obese' according to my BMI but I eat healthily, walk a lot and generally look after myself. My problem is that I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which means I put on weight very easily and it's twice as hard to lose it.

Maybe people who are 'obese' aren't that way because they're lazy and slob around all day. Maybe they have a medical condition. I'm not saying all overweight people are 'ill' - far from it - I'm just saying don't tar fat people with the same brush.
dear AB I admit to not reading the answers, but referring to females as birds hardly gives a good impression and can only assume you may be male.
I don't know how people can live with themsleves in a fat state! Unless, there is a medical reason, it is not actually difficult to remain in 'normal' proportions. You can't pick up a magazine without reading about clories, exercise, recepies, fat content of food and the like; so it beats me how the ignorance still remains. People are fat because they want to be. If they didn't want to be, they would ensure that they were well informed enough to do something about it...surely...or am I wrong. I am a size 10/12 and eat a balanced diet because I don't want to feel that sinking feeling when I pull up my jeans and they feel restrictive. I would love, absolutely love to stuff myself with chips, pizza, full fat coke, cakes, biscuits and sweets but I know I can't .....unless I want to be fat, which I don't, so I exercise a tad of self control. Not easy sometimes but I just do it!
By chance the Daily Mail {read before you dismiss] have an article called The Big Issue, sorry can't do link. This brings together the findings of various scientists regarding the causes of obesity.

Amongst the causes under investigation are the gender bending chemicals found in packaging and furniture, and a virus, the antibodies were found more in obese than thin people thus proving exposure to the virus.

To those of you so critical of the fatties the article quotes a study by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota which found that those mildly obese had a better survival rates from heart disease than those considered whose BMI was considered to be normal.

Why when obesity rates are rising are our life expectancy rates also rising? and the experts predict that the life expectancy rates will continue to rise.

Can anyone explain why the Food Standards Agency are going to ban adverts for cheese, currants, raisins, sultanas and olive pil during childrens programmes yet allow adverts for malt loaf, currant buns, frozen roast potatoes and chicken nuggets, chicken curry ready meal and strawberries in syrup.
and why is its always women's weight that is challenged? you never see a guy these days without his guts hanging over his trousers(unless hes 17)!
the report was about europe,
america is not in europe ????????????????

sorry just being picky
Yep - I do realise that sunnyday - but as someone had already mentioned America, it jogged my memory of what we saw when holidaying there!

Nothing personal. ;o}
