When I was about 15 I read two books which would have been written around that time which was the late 80s.

They were from a set of 4 books, each one telling the story of one of four sisters set around the beginning of the First World War.
I read one about the eldest sister (she might have been called Frances ) who went off to Slade Art school and was in love with a local boy (He might have been the vicar's son - Or she the vicar's daughter) who goes off to the war.
The other book was about the next daughter but I can't remember anything about her.

Very vague I know but do these ring any bells with anyone at all? The books have disappeared from the family library and nobody but me remembers them.

If anyone could suggest a title or an author it would be a great help to my google searches!

Thanks

Hello,
Would it be the Sisters of the Quantock Hills series by Ruth Elwin Harris? There were 4 titles, The Silent Shore, The Beckoning Hills, The Dividing Sea and Beyond the Orchid House. I think the Beckoning Hills one had Frances i.

Hope it's the right one.

By jove, I think you've got it!

I'm going to have to see if I can borrow them to make 100% sure but I really think you've hit the nail on the head.

Many many thanks. A 15 year old mystery solved!
Glad to be of service!!

I guess that's what comes of a childhood spent reading rather than playing outside!!

And not a bad childhood at all in my opinion.

I'm sure if the kids involved in the spate of gun crimes in South London had spent a little more time indoors reading, their lives could have been very different.
