if i supply 2.24E+15J of energy a year to a power station with a 40% efficiantcy could any one tell me the individulal steps in calculating the total amound to kWh it can produce.

by definition 1 Joule = 1 wattsecond so
60 J = 1 wattminute and
3600 J = 1 watthour and
3600,000 J = 1 kilowatthour

Therefore divide your energy (in Joules) by 3600000 to convert to KWh.

Lastly, make your adjustment for the 40% efficiency.
