Silly question probably but I had mumps at the age of 57 a couple of years ago.. .painful to say the least as most childhood diseases are when contracted as an adult.
The reason I ask is... I have the same symptoms again ..huge swollen face on the same side as before and and ear that is bright red ,huge lump behind my ear ..in fact I resemble a demented hamster and it is painful.Tried to get a doctors appointment but have to ring up again tomorrow.Sods Law !
But ....can you get ...... or has anyone had mumps twice ?

oh shaney, poor you - I wondered whether you were still poorly today.
I doubt you'd get mumps twice although when my eldest son got it it was only one side of his face....he recovered but 2 weeks later I had to go & collect him from school as it had returned on the other side. The headmistress told me that was a common occurrence but I think a gap of 2 years is a long time. Were both sides of your face affected last time?

Make sure they see you tomorrow - or I'll be there to sort 'em! Take care - hope you feel better soon x

Hi Robinia and thank you so much for answering .Last time it was only on one side of my face ..but now my right ear is stuck out at the side like a flag and it's bright red and swollen ! I don''t need a candle to light me to bed !. Plus I have a neck and face like a tree trunk . All on one side ! Not a pretty sight . It isn't as painful as when I had the mumps before which was pretty nasty as I ended up with having to get the doctor in and he gave me a morphine injection it was so awful...so I'm hoping it is just an ear infection ....I don't want to go through that again !
Last time it was all on one side ..this is why I wondered if you can get it twice .Shudder !!
I shall be up..and down that doctors post haste in the morning .xx
oooh ouch ......let us know how you are tomorrow shaney - hope you manage to get some sleep ..

night xx

When I was a kid I had measles and mumps at the same time! Apparently I looked a right sight with spots on the lumps.
Ive had mumps twice and chickenpox 3 times, they reckon you only get both once.

Thanks for your answers ..it isn't mumps thank goodness !
My doctor said that you can only get it once but I have seen conflicting things on the net and some say you can get it twice like you have yummymum .
It is however a nasty infection of the actual outer ear and to add to my joy the doctor lanced it and gave me a weeks worth of antibiotics ! So I am sat here with a pad of lint clamped on my lughole !
It seems I have scratched my ear at some stage ,broken the skin and a speck of dirt has got in from somewhere and it's become infected . He mentioned awful things like blood poisoning had I left it any longer.. The things you get eh ?
hi shaney - just nipped back to see how you are (they're all in a stupor at t'other place)

what a relief it's not mumps but still bad enough...it is amazing how these stupid things happen. Hope the anti - bio's get to work quickly & that you're feeling better very soon.
Take care xx
