we are going to gran canaria and my son's 5 year passport expires 2 months after our return date.Will this be ok

Yes, from an immigration point of view it just needs to be valid.

Package holiday companies sometimes try to 'impose' a longer period. It may be worth looking at their small print if you are using one.
you should check lots of places now want it to be valid for 6 months after return date so you should defo ask the agent you booked with
