Can anyone explain how Enigmatist arrives at 'creche'?
I remember when he first started setting for the Guardian. He was a sixth-former, or maybe even younger - and he hasn't become any less enigmatic!
Happy New Year everyone!

I am also puzzled by this clue. I have thought that soak could be 'drench' and pungent-leaved plant is 'cress', but I am not sure if that helps.
I'm still pondering on ORACHE as the answer - a plant, probably pungent leaved, but just as difficult to relate to the whole clue.
I think the word "soak" refers to a heavy drinker and the "pungent-leaved plant is "cress" as netkey said. Emerging from a drunk this would come out as "creche"!

Happy New Year!
Thanks Telberts42 - that makes sense.
