Can I use my Maestro/ Switch card just as easily in Canada as I do here in the UK? or is there a high chanrge? I'm going for 5 months and am unsure about converting money before I go.

Certainly in the big cities you'll have no problem. No charge for using it as a Debit Card but you'll be charged �1.75 for cash withdrawals.
No vested interest here, but Nationwide have no foreign currency charges on their Visa cards, and this can save a lot. I think you will find that debit cards have a high charge for foreign curency.
