Not quite a crossword but a grid 7 x 7 and 7 questions to find the animal. Then to fit into each line of the grid, although not all are 7 letter answers. When all are placed in the grid across properly, another animal reads down one column.
Here are my proposed answers and I have two final suggestions but can't work it out because my last two answers come over the grid squares! Driving me mad. So a couple of the answers must be wrong. here's what I have.......

1. One hump or two? (5) Camel
2. Flock of........ (5) Sheep (geese)
3. Close (4) Deer (seal)
4. Searh around (6) Ferret
5.' Warmer' Cockney (5) Otter??
6. Road Crossing (5) Zebra ?? this one won't fit
in, is outside the grid
7. Follow someone (5) Hound? fits outside the grid

So if you take my answers above and go down taking one letter from each column, I thought the final word animal (7) would be either Cheetah or Meerkat. But a t or a h would have to fit into clue 7 answer and nothing fits in the right place on the 7x7 grid.

Any help appreciated as this is the last bit to do, have done the rest of the local quiz and they are quite straightforward answers, nothing taxing, but this has me stumped.

Many thanks. Quizstruck

Could 7 be stork (stalk)?
There's also a pelican crossing but I presume that is too long.
How bout toucan crossing? thats shorter maybe it will fit?

Many thanks for your great answers, although road crossing has to be 5 letters. Perhaps I am on the wrong track totally with the animal down and it isn't cheetah or meerkat. It is a 7 letter word animal. Sad as I am,I 've even cut out the 7 x 7 grid and tried moving the letters to fit into them! Sheer desperation as so near and yet so far.

any other words for 5. 'warmer' Cockney? think it's hotter which rhymes with otter... but may be wrong.

Thanks all for your help. Quizstruck

giving CHEETAH in the second column. A Panda crossing was an early version of a Pelican crossing.
