System Restore (XP) hasn't worked for a long time on my PC. It appears to go through the motions but at the end says my PC could not be restored to the given date. I disabled it, got rid of all previous restore points and started again, but no change. From various searches - Google, Ask, Yahoo, etc - it appears that very many people have this problem. I hesitate to try unknown free downloads to try and cure it in case they are not what they say they are! Has anyone found a tried and trusted remedy please?

Thanks for trying Ethel. I've done everything I can think of; disabled Norton Security (temporarily of course) tried defrag; disk cleanup; full system scan. I've come to the conclusion it's just problem prone as so many people seem unable to make it work.
Are you using Norton Goback - if so - disable Windows restore and rely on Norton (much better) - having both confuses the poor processor - alternatively disable (or remove) Goback and rely on MS (Although why anyone would consider this is beyond me)

Thank you SteveSxx. I hadn't heard of Norton GoBack. It sounds interesting. I'm not very confident on doing these things myself, so I'll get some local help to give it a try.
