We will be staying in Bruges in June but as my kids are still pretty young, they won't fancy the beautiful city for 5 days in a row. Does anyone know what the coastal area near Bruges is like? Beaches? Facilities? etc.

It's busy and can be quite dirty as shipping from Antwerpen goes past there. Might be an idea to drive a bit up north into Zeeland (Netherlands). Bit quieter & possibly cleaner.
You can take a train from Brugge to Ostend, the main coastal city of Belgium. If you want more of a family beach thing, Blankenbergen would be it. If you want more posh; Knokke is the place. From Ostend you can take a coastal tram that either goes north to Blankenbergen or south to Knokke. The comment of things being poluted cuz of the harbor activities; the whole damn North Sea is poluted to a certain degree as it is one of the busiest seas in the world. You could go more up north to Katzand (in Holland). True it is more quiet, but no lifeguarding or family facilities. Or take your kids to "Het Swin"; a nature park. There is a mini-Oceanworld thing near Brugges as well. Have fun!
