I'm thinking of buying an electric cooker as opposed to a gas one, but am put off by rumours of electric cookers being much more expensive to run.

Is this true? Which is the better buy in the long run?

I would always go with gas.You have to wait for electric to heat up.There`s not much can go wrong with a gas cooker, but with electric you will have some parts that will need replacing.
Pea-Pod has said it really, gas is instantaneous and more controlable,
They say that the ideal combination is an electric oven and a gas hob - electric because it cooks more evenly, gas because its easier to control - Confused? You will be lol
I've had both electric an gas - I think there are arguments for both - yes, gas would be cheaper to run ( my 25kg bottle last for at leasts 7months ) - as for controllabilty gas is easier to control but even if I use the simmer ring on the gas hob I still find it is too hot even on low heat.
Electric can be turned down lower than gas but takes longer to react - the choice is yours.
The most popular and cost efficient is an electric fan oven and a gas hob.
However, if you can afford then you should get an electric induction hob. They are QUICKER than gas and just as controlable. Most importantly they are so easy to keep clean. They work via a magnetic field so your pans must have a metal content.
Some good deals for these on E Bay
