Dear All...

I have posted this in Law too - I'm so annoyed/upset I just want your opinions...

My boyf and I are looking for a new flat while we are saving to buy our own house. He has joint custody of his gorgeous 4 year old from previous relationship.

I have just been told by letting agent it's their policy not to rent to couples with children - surley this is discrimination?? I'm worried we don't find anywhere now - he's a little angel and it's unfair letting agents/landlords put a blanket ban on kids??

Thanks for listening!

Well I am sure you will find a letting agent that will allow you to have children, however I suppose if someone owns a house and wants to rent it out then they are able to pick and choose who they want and if they want to say no pets or children then they can. However I think your complaint is that it is a sort of 'blanket' ban ... and I can understand it but I suppose it is their right as they are running a business. Just like you have the right to sell your house to whom you wish. So go to another letting agent or look privately, there are lots of people with kids who rent so someone must be ok with it.
The letting agency are quite within their rights to put a 'no children' clause into their letting contracts. They're not all the same, though, so shop around. We have rented for a number of years now, this being our second property - both times, we have gone via the same letting agency. When we began we had two kids and two dogs and still found a decent house.

Our letting agency is purely that - they specialise in rented property only and belong to a 'trade' body with a specified code of practice - as opposed to being an estate agent that also lets property.

Please don't be put off. Keep looking and you will find somewhere, I promise.
