rundll32.exe slows down Win XP

My PC runs slowly. When I ctrl-alt-del there are two instances of rundll32.exe running. If I close them both down the PC springs into action and runs fine. Any ideas?

rundll32.exe on an XP machine indicates a virus...see www.answersthatwork.com and look at their tasklist explanations.
It sounds almost certainly like a virus is on your machine. Run an up-to-date virus scan to detect and remove.
