Good on you BenD but will they pay any attention? No. You might as well be talking to the wall. It drives me to distraction as well.

BenDToy I'm so with you on this! Simple answer - if it's another country YES YOU NEED A PASSPORT! The worst one was the other day - can i travel on an expired passport? Duh what do you think?
I managed to travel to France and back from the UK without my passport [having forgotten it and only realised when I arrived at the ferry terminal] So yes it is possible to travel abroad from the UK without a passport - mind you this was pre 9/11 so I'm not sure my blagging would work quite so well in today's heightened security
One of the supposed benefits of joining the European Common Market was that you wouldn't need a passport to travel within the Community. Though that's been a complete and utter lie so far, it might account for a little of the confusion. It doesn't excuse questions about Jamaica and the like, though.
The UK opted out of the Schengen agreement which allows free circulation between EU member states i.e. no border controls. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden however are all part of the Schengen Zone - though Norway and Iceland aren't in the EU....?

OK there's an explanation here http://www.eurovisa.info/SchengenCountries.htm
