By far the electric toothbrush is best. My dentist is alwas pleased with my teeth and how they are looked after.Brenda
good question, but I would suggest both are as good, both me and im indoors use manual toothbrushes and (touch wood) not need for dental treatment for many years. Some of the electrics are a bit pricey aren't they?
I asked my dentist last week should I invest in an electric on and was told no, they're aren't any better, nor are they any worse.

Its how well you clean your teeth rather than the type of brush apparently!
I was plagued with toothache for years, as a child, then my teen years were spent with a bottle of clove oil nearby, and then into my twenties. When I decided enough was enough (with the toothache) and changed my dentist (because of moving home) I discussed with my new dentist what on earth I could do to stop the continual pain. It was suggested I start off by using an electric toothbrush, and some little fluffy floss sticks instead of ordinary floss, and since then I can honestly say I have never had toothache since. (some 20 years now) I put this down solely to the change of toothbrush, and can only think that it must do a really good job of hunting out all the rubbish between your teeth.
Yes I agree with that arburgirl. my dentist was the first to tell me to get an electric one. You can get them for 12.99 which is half price at Asda at the moment. an OralB one. also flossing has to be done first and that also stops gum troubles. Brenda
i was told by my dentist 2 get a philips sonicare .i did it was 100 pounds .I did not think its that great but no problems with teeth when i go dentist so it must do its job well .i would not pay 100 pounds again if it broke just get cheap one
I was recently advised to get an electric toothbrush by my dentist and I wasn't too keen at first but I have now got one and my teeth definately feel a lot cleaner afterwards. They have a lot more power than a manual toothbrush and you just hold it to your teeth and let it do the work!

I was advised to get an electric Braun one with a charger (not batteries as these run out quick and don't provide as much power). The one I got was from Boots 25 and that was on a deal where there was another one free so check out the offers, I was told not to spend much over 30 because my dentist said they are no better.
What about the battery powered ones? Im using the colgate one at the moment, it was only a fiver..how do these compare to the electic ones?
I use a Braun battery operated toothbrush & my teeth always feel so clean & smooth after using it. I change the heads regularly enough & floss every day using Oral-B Satin Tape. My dentist is always happy with my teeth & gums when I go for my 6 monthly check ups.

I wouldn't go back to using an ordinary toothbrush.
Electric toothbrushes are by far and away better, like arburgirl I had problems with my teeth and have (touch wood) not had any since switching to an electric brush a year ago.

The only down side I found was that my gums bled the first couple of times I used it, but after a week or so that stopped and its been fine ever since.
Electric toothbrushes are okay until there's a power cut, or you have to put a shilling in the meter!

I keep a stock of batteries for my Braun!

thanks for all your advice. i will persevere with the electric brush for a while as i feel it just might be doing a better job. my biggest problem is the time it takes- i can rattle round my mouth with my toohbrushh really quickly but it takes much longer with the electric one but you can't put a price on a nice smile!!!!! THANKS
i always used an electric one for many years (Oral B) quite expensive version. first one wouldnt hold its charge after much use and so then replaced with another. But for the last about 18 months ive reverted back to ordinary brush, dont know what made me do that but anyway the dentist is more pleased with my teeth now and i have much less plaque ( i always use same toothpaste) so i shall continue like this.
My dentist is always telling me i should use an electic toothbrush and i must say that they are great. I never went back!
my twin sister and i went to the dentist once and i had been using my electric tootbh brush and she had been using a manual brush. as a result, my teeth were fine and my sister needed a clean by the dentist which cost a small fortune. buy an electric one and it will probably, in the long run save you money at the dentist as it is getting more and more expensive.
I totally concur with the positives on using an electric toothbrush. I have be using one for about 10 years now and know that my teeth are in better condition now than they have ever been.
SMUDGE you would have to be very unlucky to have a power supply failure at the same time that you recharge your tootbrush. Put your hand in your pocket man and get the real deal and then it won't matter if you run out of batteries.
