Recently updated my internet security. Files I have created myself, perhaps only a few minutes previously, now take ages to open and I have to wait for them to be virus scanned. Just as well to be safe, but is this usual and/or necessary?

Bet you're using either McAffee or Norton. Get AVG and stop cluttering up your machine with junky bloatware!

Thanks rojash but I guess I'm stuck with what I have for the time being. Coldicote

Thank you, I'll certainly have a look at AVG. Unfortunately I've just spent out on Norton and feel reluctant to waste it - but the time will come. I was hoping that some adjustment (perhaps a box to tick or untick) might be possible in the existing set-up, but don't have much hope of finding it.
Coldicote, AVG is free. If you bought Norton, your money is wasted whether you continue to use it or not. To suffer the consequences of bad software is surely no less wasteful than binning it?

Grateful for the advice from both who have replied. I've had a look at the websites and am convinced. I'll give it a try.
As no one actually answered your Question. No it is not normal or necessary.NIS does not scan a file every time you open it. I would suggest you recheck your settings,or the programme has somehow become corrupted
As an addendum to my previous answer,I was recently infected with a Trojan named winlogonhook.AVG 7.1 was unable to even find it. My spysweeper program found it but was unable to remove it. I removed it by other means.I have always used Norton(or Symantec as they bought Norton) and have never had the problems you describe.I decided to try AVG because of all the good reports, however the results above tell a different story.
