I am planning to get my first mortgage with my partner next year. In 5ish years I plan to stay at home for 3-4 years while I have small children. What is the best mortgage option in this case? Would I need to overpay first in order to take a mortgage break/pay less? Thank you.

get a flexible mortgage, suchas the one which abbey do. you can make overpayments, with a view to paying less later. 9you normally have to do it in that order. Its probably going to be quite hard to make 4 years worth of oberpayments in the next five years though. You can also use any savings to offset the mortgage so instead of being paid interest on the amount, you chose for that interest to go towards payng off the sum
