How deep do foundations have to be to protect them from frost heave? I've been told 450mm to the top, and 450mm to the bottom of foundations - which is right?

As a general rule of thumb, at least 3' (900mm) to the bottom, but they may have to be deeper depending on ground type and local conditions. Get a professional to advise you. Try Building Control at your local council and ask for a Building Inspector.
