Is there any good small recording machine on the market that would be good to take to college and record a tutor's lesson which would work in combination with hastily scribbled notes?

Hastily scribbled notes and the recommended course texts are fine. The biggest advantage you'll get is by reading beyond the basic reading list and reading other texts, journal articles etc.

I'd avoid recording the lectures themselves. Strictly speaking, you're governed by the Data Protection Act and need the permission of everyone that's going to be on your recording, including students shouting out questions! LMAO!!!

Sorry if this doesn't help but I think the recording's a bad, time consuming idea.
a cassette recorder. olympus do some micro size ones for about 20 notes. some mp3 players can record through a built in mic but usualyl the quality and range is so poor that for a lecture it'd be useless.
Minidisc recorders are very good for this. You can drop the quality right down and squeeze loads of spoken voice recording onto one disc. They've been almost universally superceeded by MP3 players, so you can get them and their associated microphones dirt cheap on eBay.
