What am I doing wrong? Just lately my fried mushrooms are soggy and horrible, more boiled than fried.
I use vegetable oil and don't overcook them.

Perhaps the oil isn't hot enough before you add the fungi ?
Always do ours in butter and cook them until they're dark brown.
The oil must not be hot enough and you may have too much of it. You can always cook them for longer.
Use butter or olive oil.
^^^Z-M has reminded me - I use a mix of oil and butter. Yum!

Cooking mushrooms in anything other than butter is a sin!

However it's worth remembering that the constituents of some vegetable oils might have been changed (possibly resulting in them only being able to achieve a lower temperature without going up in smoke) because a great deal of the vegetable oil used in this country normally comes from Ukraine.

I do get a lot of black liquid out of the mushrooms now, not appetising
^add a little oil to the butter - It'll prevent it from burning.
agree on the above - you need the heat!

Actually, I quite like them quickly seared off and then served, still retaining a little bite, maybe a little herb like lemon thyme added - and a turn of black pepper......
As per the others you need the heat up enough to cook off the liquid (you aren’t washing them I trust) and then they will fry nicely.
Agree with above butter is best. If uoure seeing a lot of black oil or other extract from mushrooms that does suggest they're a little psst their prime. Try to cook them before they get there and reheat as needed, they will keep 2 or 3 extra days cooked.
Could it be that they're an abomination?
