20,000 female veggies and vegans are 33 percent more prone to broken hips.

1. Are you surprised?
2. Wonder if this holds for men as well - conceptually, I can't see why not?
3. In being PC and wokeish, I presume it holds for transgender MtF....tongue in cheek.

in the DT page 3 but given they have blockers to non-subscrips, here's another source, essentially the sme article:

An explanation of the research by the authors of the study, they felt there was a gap in research regarding certain types of fractures in women. https://theconversation.com/vegetarian-women-have-33-greater-risk-of-hip-fracture-here-are-three-things-you-can-do-to-reduce-your-risk-187898

Swings and roundabouts really.
Eat loads of red meat and your bones are strong and healthy, but you die of an heart attack.
Have a dairy free diet and your bones are not strong.

I reckon a fracture is not as bad as your heart exploding.

(Not veggie btw, and one heart attack under my belt).
Too much red meat can leach calcium from bones, making them weak, according to some reports.
Eat meat for strong muscles; eat dairy for strong bones.

not surprised, we are designed to eat anything and everything, that's why we are Omnivores. If there is any doubt look in your mouth. Cutting out entire food groups is only going to lead to malnutrition.

I hope the answer removed was 'what a load of crap' - there has been around 150 y research on diet and limits of diet and can you stay healthy ? ( yes)

the third increase is this
If 3 in 10000 fracture their hips ( suitable age group) in control groups ( which will include veggies in the control group) and it is 4 per 10 000 veggies , then the increase is 33%

I think Tomus is CORRECT in pointing out that control studies have to be done and it is only an association anyway

and someone say gairlz get them more often than boys ( yes)

DOI ( TTT will quip - foo is dat doilie? what doilie dat den?) - my brudda who is a veggie, mad one actually, has just fallen and fractured his replaced hip....

my answer to the news was : has he made a will?

I'm female, in my early 70s and not a veggie or vegan. For diagnostic reasons (bad back) I'd an MRI scan in 2017 and one aside comment was that my bone density was pretty good. Naturally I'm pleased about this, but last year a blood test showed my vit D level was down and I had managed to break 2 ribs and a finger in 2 and a half years. So I've been taking 1 Calcium and Vit D tablet a day since then. I had a very nasty fall about 5 weeks ago - my left arm was almost black with bruising, but I didn't break anything. So perhaps all post-menopausal ladies should think about taking this to help to fight osteoporosis - I'm sure I saw that mentioned somewhere in the thread. Then dietary causes may be clearer.
There are many large groups of people that have been vegetarian or vegan for thousands of years, such as followers of the ancient religion of Jainism, currently 6m.
There has also been groups of people that have an almost entirely meat based diet with very little plant based food, such as traditional Inuit people.

I think the 'modern' diet of highly processed food is the real problem combined with a lifestyle that is considerably more sedentary for many than even 40 years ago when every day life needed more effort.
