Flies can be as flies as they like, as long as it is well away from me, my food & drink, and anything, such as utensils, I may wish to use. If they don't comply with that then I let them be an ex-fly.
Who wants a fly which has quite possibly recently been sitting on a pile of dog poo landing on their sandwich?
As someone else said, if you're getting more than the occasional fly in your house you need to look for the source.

I wouldn't allow flies to remain alive in my house. The moment I spot one it's splattered. It's not just the food issues either. I once had one land on a scratch on my arm - the result a nasty infection that took quite a while to remedy. Come near me fly, and you're dead!
I'm not a fan of flies, mainly because like lb says, who knows where they've been once they fly into your house and land on things ! In the summer though, those big ones zoom in and zoom out again fairly quickly, as all the doors at the back are wide open. However, IF they don't fly straight out and start annoying both me and my dog, they will be zapped, especially if I am eating and they are trying to land on my butty !! However, I won't kill wasps, bees and spiders and even though not a fan of wasps, I will try and get them out because they do have a purpose, they are pollinators, like bees.
There was a thread about flies recently, from jj I think and I advised getting some fly screen curtains. They are brilliant as they magnetically shut after you (and your dog) walk through them. Homebase and B&Q sell them I think.
