My father never called me by my Christian name, only as either 'son' or 'Binabs' which I accepted as being expressions of affection.

Long after he died in 1964, I was 30 by then, I began to wonder where the the term ' Binabs' (Sp ?) came from. I've never heard it since then and cannot find any clue to its origin . Any ideas ?

Cheers. D. ( Binabs )

Try googling the word for information.
Google search throws up no results and the urban dictionary is not much use with 'back in a bit'.
It's a puzzle

Thanks to you both. I've tried Google searches many times without success but wondered if it's a generational thing now long gone.
How is it pronounced? Bi or be?
And what part of the country did your dad come from?
It's always possible that it's a word you couldn't pronounce when you were learning to talk and your dad picked it up as a name to call you.
^^I was always called"Pebby" and still am as a pet-name - it was supposedly after an animal in a book I read very often as a young child.
When I looked it up, Derek, I got that it means Beanbag.... I think that's quite sweet. :-)

Some great answers. Thanks.
Barry, it was pronounced BINabs as in Bin Laden ! and my dad was born and bred in the City (of London) in 1898 as was I until we all moved to SE London in 1937.

Doesn't sound like me - or my dad, but thanks anyway. Incidentally, where did you 'look it up' ? Cheers. D
Cockneys would call the kids Bin Lids.

Could it be an adaptation connected to your real name? Are you Abraham?

Binab is an Indian surname.
