How difficult did puzzlers find it this week? It was only when I went through looking for the 'subtle clues' that I twigged what "gherkin and grated cheese" was hinting at. I believe goodgoalie used to live in the vicinity, so I imagine he found if fairly easy:

I assume that mention of "enormous spotted handkerchief" was hinting at Dick Whittington, who traditionally left home with all his worldly goods packed up inside one.

Has anyone got any ideas as to the name of the architect who "sadly no longer with us, is associated with edifices on either side". It isn't clear whether "either side" is in relation to the Lutyens contribution (139-144) or the street itself.
