Can't believe it is 50 years since I watched this in the cinema, once seen never forgotten. Nice article in the DM, take it with a pinch of salt, though

That's a very interesting article, (especially the reference to the Capitol riot), thanks for the link Barry.
It is an excellent film, and i do remember how shocking the taboo of male rape was in that graphic scene.

It also gave birth to the wonderful tee-shirt slogan, which only makes sense when you have seen the film - an image of a canoe, and the slogan, "Row faster, I hear banjos!".

I find it interesting that some of the DM comments state the film wouldn't me made today because of 'woke'.
In my opinion the film is 'woke' - it woke many people up to the existence of male rape, which as Andy states was a very taboo subject when the film was released.
I think of that film every time I pass under a footbridge on the motorway
Really interesting article and it's quite amazing how such a brilliant film was made given all the 'off-set' goings on.
Definitely never forgotten. I know it's the squeal like a pig that it's most remembered for but it was the dueling banjo boy and his slitty eyes then the deformed child, the genetically incorrect, that creeped me out the most and sticks in my mind.
barry, i'm afraid you have surprised me now with your age :)
love the Dueling banjos scene:

Dreadful film - apart from the Duelling Banjos.
I've posted Duelling Banjos a few times on Mamya's Night Night thread. Love it.

You may know, you may not, that the man in the film is not a musician -

NJ, it certainly isn't a film I could watch twice.

I cannot concur with NJ's assessment - it may not be to his taste, but it is an excellent film.

The film is clearly aligned with Lord Of The Flies - a portrait of how we react when the civilisation that cocoons us is stripped away and we are left to survive on our animal instincts.
The best actor in the film,in my eyes, was Bill McKinney. After he was killed he had to lie there pretending to be dead for about five minutes while the rest of the actors talked around him, prodded him, tried to attack him.Five minutes! He should have got an oscar for that scene alone.
I've seen it 3 or 4 times since it's release.
AH: "ou may know, you may not, that the man in the film is not a musician " - neither of them? I know one is Ronny Cox, famous for many parts including Cpt Jellicoe in STNG!

andy, there are a few excellent films (in my opinion) that I couldn't watch again. Schindler's List, The Exorcist, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are some of them.
TTT - // AH: "ou may know, you may not, that the man in the film is not a musician " - neither of them? //

Sorry - I meant Billy Redden who has appeared in a couple of other films as a 'banjo player', mainly due to his cult status in Deliverence.

With the payment he got, he bought a part-share in a restaurant where he worked as a cook and dishwasher, but I believe he did not make a lot of money out of his role and the subsequent success of the film.
Providing i leave enough of a gap between viewing, i can watch 'excellent' films over and again, Barry. Cuckoo's Nest is definitely one of those i've seen several times, Exorcist a few times. The only 'excellent' film i had trouble watching a 2nd time was Papillion, mainly because much of what took place was dialogue rather than action.
