Tesco have refused to stock some Heinz products saying that they are concerned for their customers, as the price increase isn't justified in these difficult times. What a load of bull! If Tesco had their customers' interests at heart, they would take the same stance against their petrol suppliers. Tesco are always the first to put petrol prices up, then everyone follows. Within 7 days last week, Tesco put the price of petrol up by 3p, 4p and another 4p. 11p in a week. I bought my petrol from Tesco for years. They used to be one of the cheapest. Not any more. They now seem to be the biggest exploiters of the fuel situation. Smaller independents round here are selling petrol cheaper than Tesco. Morrisons and Asda are 3p cheaper. Bye bye Tesco.

For petrol, any hypermarket/supermarket has no reason not to be cheaper than independents since they have greater buying power, and for them petrol is principally to drag customers in to their main business, which is the store, mainly groceries. That stated, in my experience Tesco is rarely, if ever, cheaper for petrol than other local supermarkets. They ain't that great on petrol price.

As for the Heinz row, I'm happy for Heinz products to go missing from the shelves. I don't think I buy many of their products these days. I used to buy that brand of beans, but the flavour changed some years ago so I avoid them now. Mess about with your popular product and expect to lose custom.
Perhaps that isn't feasible. Costs from suppliers obviously vary but I've no idea what they're paying for anything or what their acceptable profit margins are - and they absolutely MUST make a profit on everything they sell. They're not a charity.
Maybe Tesco would like to sell more of their own brand products...just a thought.

Redhelen, because that is not the case in this town, and the surrounding area. Independents, Morrisons and Asda are all cheaper. Ipso Fatso! :o)
Does Tesco own all the filling stations on its sites?
That occurred to me, Pasta, but quite honestly anyone who likes Heinz baked beans is never going to be happy with the cheaper alternative. They'll shop for what they want elsewhere.

....and Tesco are always first with the price hike.

However, it seems that everyone is happy for Tesco to carry on as they have been doing. Go for it folks! Time for cuppa.
Byeeeeeeeeeeee!
\\ That hasn't happened round here, Vulcan. Independents have been cheaper for weeks now.//

Yes, that's because, with a slower turnover, they haven't had to restock. The independent garage near me restocks roughly every two to three weeks. The local Tesco s/market has a tanker pulling in every couple of days.

You've made a good case for the independents there Vulcan! Go independent!
I think Vulcan has the answer. High turnover - hence with the cost of fuel going up on practically a daily basis, they're paying higher prices every time they restock.
so firstly you said independents and now its
Independents, Morrisons and Asda are all cheaper

Make your mind up - mind you why bother with facts when you just want to rant?
Buy Branston BB like I do. They're nicer.
Tesco etc. negotiate with their suppliers to get the best profit margin (cost v sales price). If they can't get that from Heinz (or anyone) they may boycott the product. Supermarkets have a lot of clout.

Asda has been cheapest for fuel around here - if you are OK with the queues!
We only really have Tesco and an Iceland so not much competition. Heinz big soup at Tesco £1.40 and at Iceland where they were £1 a couple of weeks ago they are now £1.70. Petrol at Tesco 2 weeks ago was 19p a litre cheaper than at the Shell garage a couple of hundred yards down the road.
You're comparing apples and pears.
You've driven the poor man away with all the nit picking.
there is no nit picking - all the pickers have returned to Romania!
Petrol at Tesco yesterday in my nearest town was £1.93 - the nearby Shell was £1.99
I thought it was the other way round . Heinz have pulled some of their products out of Tesco.
on petrolprices.com, Tesco are almost always in the cheapest 2 or 3 local pumps in my area; the others are usually Asda. It's worth signing up (you need an account but it's free), just on general principles. They're certainly not ripping me off.
