they both make me feel extremely unhappy as at the time they were living they had absolutely nothing though they both worked, and reared 6 or 7 children.
I am the youngest and mum did say she had nothing until I grew up and worked. Any wonder any time I looked at her she was crying and I used to say why mum - she would say I have no money and I vowed at 10 years old I would give her what I could. In 1972 I was backdated quite a sum of money in the Civil Service and today it would have been equivalent to £600.
I laughed that day - she shut me in the "wee scullery" - put a door over the handle so other siblings couldn't get in and of course smarmy me paid it out to her in fivers. I thought she was going to pass out. She started to cry again only this time with joy. That was my best mother's present I could only do for her. The sleaket thing she said "oh don't tell the father - he will go out and get drunk" - of course I gave him a few pound and yes he did get drunk. That's a big memory for me.

My maternal Grandparents never seemed to have much money and only lived in a tiny little house with outside loo. Grandad always worked hard and Grandma did shifts in a local chippy, but I never remember them going on holiday at all. Grandad was dead by the time I had grown up, so I couldn't treat him sadly, but I used to buy Grandma nice things at birthdays and Christmas and often took her flowers and treat her to some tripe (which she absolutely loved) every Saturday lol. Of course they are long gone now and I always wish I had done more - memories eh, they can sometimes break you.
