Why on earth did I think he was blind? Anyone else think that? I would have a lost a lot of money if I'd put my money where my brain was

It was always the thought during the 60/70s. Some even said he had pink eyes believe it or not.
I found out watching a documentary about him that he was extremely short sighted and in those days covered it up with sunglasses

I would swear I watched him (on tv) being led to and from the mic on stage as if he were blind.
I must have been dreaming.
I also vividly recall him appearing on a UK tv show such as Pebble Mill at One and totally missing his cue to start singing (miming) - not his fault, there were technical problems and he couldn't hear the music. He thought it very funny and they all had a good laugh.
I must have dreamt that, too, because he died in 1988 and I thought the show aired much later than that.
He would have been a liability riding his motorbike if he had been blind.

Eh ?

How do you cover up shortsightedness with sunglasses ?
Remember Lord Rockinghams' XI? They had a hit with a tune called Hoots Mon. One of the sax players was Benny Green. They were due to perform on TV but Green said the strong lighting was hurting his eyes, so could he wear dark glasses?
Afterwards, he kept getting mail addressed to "The Blind Saxophone Player". As if he could have read it anyway!
Because if he was very short sighted being without glasses on stage could create many problems such as squinting , those sunglasses may have been especially adapted for him and who knows, he could well have had pink eyes and may have been an Albino hence the dyed black hair, who knows ?
