Do you still have to have the banns read if you are getting married in church.
Not heard of any mention for years and years.
Only thought of this as it was in one of my crosswords.

Apparently yes, Caran ( I remember all those years ago having to go and see the vicar )

Not heard of it for years either but then again not been to a church wedding for years.
The legal requirement for the reading of banns only applies to the Church of England. [Marriage Act 1949, as amended by Church of England Marriage (Amendment) Measure 2012].

There used to be a similar legal requirement within the Church of Scotland but that was abolished by the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977.

The Roman Catholic church was never covered by Parliamentary statute but, having first introduced the concept of reading banns in 1215, abolished the practice in 1983.

Methodists have never used the practice within their churches.
Haven't been to a church wedding in years so have no idea.

Mr A and I married in the 1980's,Church of Scotland and the minister read the banns (I think over 3 weeks). He refused to call me bachelorette of the Parish and insisted on Spinster.
:-)
LOL.
I know when we got married in a registry office 25 years ago their equivalent of reading the banns was to put a notice on the board.
you wouldnt hear the banns read at the wedding though would you? they have to be done before i think
