I know a lot of Judge Judy programs are getting on a bit, but I have seen some from around 2010/13/14.
The Americans seem to live in a different world, taking each other to court for a broken Xbox a mobile phone or a flat screen TV. What planet these people on.

Amazingly they have young kids sitting in court 6/7/8 year old who look to be crapping their pants just because while riding their bikes scratched a car.

They do give odd people positions of prominence on the telly.

Judge Judy, Oprah, anybody from The View, Conan False-Laugh, James Corden...
But it's not a real court - they get paid to appear on the show and the producers pay the 'damages'.
Some people will do anything to get on tv.

The people that appear on the UK equivalent Judge Rinder are no different

It is a real court barry, and genuine cases.
I hope it's not representative!
Do you really believe that, Sandra? There have been totally fake, made-up cases so the participants could get on tv, get a free trip to LA with hotel accommodation, food and expenses, get the free money awarded by the show as well as the appearance fee - it's a win, win for everyone.

If anything it is arbitration, not a law court. The show employed many researchers to plough through court records looking for suitable cases and contact the parties to see if they wanted to appear on the show.

It is a cheap programme, made purely for entertainment.

Well all I can say barry is that it don't say they are fake at the beginning of the program. And if researchers are looking through court cases like you say, how can they be fake?
Because it has already been to court - this is just rehashed for your entertainment.

The researchers also give out the phone numbers for people who want to appear on the show to make contact. If they've got a good enough story and the producers like them, they are quids in. Whether the story is true or not really doesn't matter.

Judge Judy stopped being a judge before she joined this series. Judge Rinder isn't a judge, either
It's explained well enough here:

Question Author
Rehashed I understand.
Judge Judy was filmed on a tv set at Sunset Bronson Studios, Los Angeles.
judge judy is arbitration. No judge would talk so much in real court, nor be so rude.
The beginning would also have you believe it's set in new york, but as barry says, it's in LA "where did you think you were coming today; the beach?"
"The cases are REAL, the rulings are FINAL" they also say, and that's true, the contestants agree to abide by the arbitration results and not pursue their cases through the court system
