To avoid giving the game away to those who may not have watched yet, I'll post my comments below.

Did anyone else find the end disappointing? What did he do? Where did he go? Did his family assume he'd died? I wanted more.

I was very surprised by the ending.
However, these plot twists have featured throughout the sux series.
There was always supposed to be 7 series with the last one ending at the outbreak of WWII or some time during it.
I suppose this ending sets things up nicely for the supposed film instead.

I guess all fans will have to wait for the film. I thought it was a great ending and set it up nicely for the film :o)

Thanks for your answers. If the film is going to answer the questions I look forward to it. Brilliant series though. I had to use the sub-titles because I couldn't understand what they were saying much of the time but nevertheless I really enjoyed it.
