I was only saying to my wife yesterday that I haven't seen a Maypole since I left Lancashire 60 years ago. Our local parish church always used to come round our part of the town on Mayday.

There is a splendid May Day celebration, covid restricted, every year in the village of Ickwell, Bedfordshire.
It's a good day out, keeping history alive.
In fact, there's a new pole this year.

do they rent it out for private dances the rest of the year?

There's a church called St Andrew Undershaft in the City of London - the shaft was the maypole outside. It's gone but the church is still there.
Hooray hooray the first of May
Outdoor bonking starts today!!
I remember dancing round a maypole once at my junior school. This was in the late 70s. Can't recall if it was on a school trip or in the playground though.
it would have been better yesterday, rowan, warm and sunny. Cooler and wet today.
The thought just makes me shiver...

It is cold today. Hopefully, it will be warmer tomorrow, for the Ickwell May Day festivities.

(Well, I find it interesting) :-)
Answerbank? It has its moments.
I have photos of then little pasta taking part in the yearly May Day festivities at the village school in Blunham. We were only a few miles from Ickwell.
It's very pretty round those parts.

It is Pasta. Did you live in Blunham?
Yes...11 years. Our first house in the UK. Fields to the front and at the end of a very long garden. It was a good place for little pasta to grow up.
Question Author
Pasta, I have three friends who live in Bromham. I used to teach in Sandy.
