I have had oral thrush for months. My mouth felt like it was gacky and slimy, and I would get what I thought was phlegm stuck in my throat at night- I thought caused by my cpap machine. My tongue and teeth were gurning all the time as it felt so uncomfortable, and swalling food was impossible- it would get stuck and my throat would bleed. I was seen by ENT, who said it was in my throat (not mouth, hence not being able to see much), given Nystan, then given the tablets, then more tablets, then both, and the moment I stop taking it, it comes straight back. Has anyone had this, or can Sqad offer thoughts? How can I get rid of it? I am already low carb and rinse after using my inhaler, and clean my cpap regularly.

I presume that the E.N.T surgeon took a swab and confirmed the diagnosis of oral thrush.

If the diagnosis has been established by the above it would seem that modern treatment hasn't worked, so I suggest the old fashioned treatment of Listerine mouth washes every four hours.

If you are a diabetic, make sure your blood sugars are under control.

Thanks Sqad- he didn't take a swab, he just looked with a camera. Should I ask to be seen again and a swab taken? Is there a certain Listerine that works on candida or will they all help?
I'm not diabetic, which is why I can't work out why it won't budge!
Well, your reply has set the cat among the pigeons in respect of the diagnosis.

Is your inhaler a steroid?

I would suggest using Listerine (any type) routinely after using your inhaler......that is if it does contain a steroid.
Question Author
It does, I have a salbutamol and also a steroid one.Weird though, I've used it for 40+ years and never had this before. That's why I thought it might be my cpap. Have you ever heard of a cpap causing oral thrush?
Scarlett.......yes I have, but only the steroid containing inhalers.
Can you reduce the use of your steroid inhaler?
Question Author
Sqad, I only have one puff a day and without it I usually wake up struggling. Or do you mean can I do without the cpap? Def not- 63 incidents per hour!
Scarlet...clearly you need the steroids, so we can forget that.

We need to play for time .
Have you tried low sugar low carb diet, aloe vera, cutting out wheat products, pomegranate
I have steroid asthma inhalers and despite a lot of care I occasionally get Thrush. Sounds as if you have tried everything. The only thing I can suggest to ease matters is live, natural yoghurt. I eat it every morning for breakfast. Worth a try for a few days, just a good couple of spoonsful swilled around your mouth and swallowed. If it works a bit - it buys you some time.
Question Author
I have indeed- I don’t eat sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, grains or beans! That’s why I’m not diabetic. I was borderline and reversed it completely by changing my diet. So I don’t think sugar can be the cause of the Candida :/ Also I don’t eat dairy so can’t have standard yoghurt but I take a probiotic every day.
Have you considered fermented foods such as sauerkraut or kimchee? They are said to be beneficial.
Question Author
Sorry for the late reply Pasta- yes I do have kimchi most days!
