Every New Year's Eve, all over Germany, the people watch this sketch by the English music hall comedian Freddie Frinton. If you have never seen it , or want to watch it again, it is here and you can perhaps see why the Germans love this English sketch so much that it is part of their New Year celebrations

A true classic that seems to improve with the passage of time.
Khandro - are you a native of Germany or British and living there ?
Brilliant. My Dad use to love Freddie Frinton.
I seem to remember he had a show where he played the drunk but I can't remember what it was called or the name of the actress that played his wife.
Anyone know the name of this actress?
Despite not drinking himself he played a brilliant drunk.

Without the name of the show it would be hard to find his leading lady.

This one is named of course - May Warden.
Libby Morris?

Baz, I'm a true Brit expat.

The print they showed this afternoon on ARD1 (BBC1 equivalent) was better quality, maybe digitally cleaned up.

Frinton actually patented this sketch so no one else could perform it, not that anyone could do it better anyway
Thanks khandro for answering .

If I can be nosey .
What's the story - what took you there - you don't get many expats in Germany ( I could be wrong there )?
Freddie Frinton was a class act. I think he did this live on stage with Thora Hird too. This was filmed in 1963 by Heinze Dunkhase, who was born in Hamburg. The French love this sketch also.

In one of his drunk sketches, Freddie having trouble getting the glass to his mouth, undid the knot in his tie so both ends hung down, he held one end between the glass & his left hand & pulled down the other end with his right, raising the glass to his mouth.

He was a class act, but never quite made the top echelon.

Baz; it's a long story. :0)
The choral/drama group I belonged to in France once featured this as part of the annual Christmas concert. It was hilarious and the language barrier was smashed to pieces!
I didn't find it funny. They both played their part well but it was too long.

My sense of humour is a bit warped and dark, a typical Scot. :-)
A few more vignettes of him here. Note what a tidy lass Thora Hird was. Thanks for reminding us, Khandro, of what we have seemingly been trying to "no platform".

wolf, is 10 minutes beyond your attention span?
Yes. I have a very short attention span. I am defective in the brain department. :-)

I thought it was a really old clip but it is the same age as me. Or does that mean that I'm old?

Question Author
only joking wolf, happy new year!
