The beans used for tinned baked beans are usually haricot beans, but Heinz use Navy beans - very similar but bigger.

They grow on a climbing plant similar to broad beans.
Most canned baked beans, at least here in the U.S., are pinto or kidney beans. Both varieties grown on low bushes about 18 to 24 inches tall which makes the easier to harvest by machine and since they are colored do not suffer from quality mark down for the farmer due to spots... They are similar to soybeans but the plants are somewhat larger...
If you believe everything you read on Wikipedia, navy bean is a synonym for haricot bean, which is the term I am familiar with. See White Beans.
