I have a full grid but cannot parse 26a and 1d. Both have a misprint.

26. Ignoring independence made French shout (3)

1. Employed compromise with Foreign Office supporting N Yorks
town date back to Kiev (10, two words) My answer is 7,3.

Misprints give me 5,4,3,4,4,5,6,2,4,4.
I cannot make any sense out of the words that appeared.

Just parsed 26a. I was unaware of the French word.
Misprint in last word,
Fa(i)t = STOUT
Question Author
Thanks JJ
The Yorkshire town is SETTLE and the last word has a misprint (v should be R).
Settled Off ?
Settle(N Yorks town) + D(ate) + F(oreign) O(ffice)(reversed) + F (instead of V for the mistake)?
prof that's better!
You have the right word counts for the initial message, hankir. It's telling you to derive two messages - for the first message take alternate first and last letters - for the second, go back to the top and this time start with the last letter, then the first, then the last...
...the names are a bit strange, and the (2nd) major name is famous - but known by his first name and surname, not the E. and C. middle names.

I am still struggling with Listener.
I have last line of quatrain.
But missing answers to 1a, 11a, 28a, 4d, 5d, 8d, 22d.
For the downs the moved letters give -
4 nought... lie
5 ou ran without they
8 spun derivation (abbrev DER)
22 thrust casing ton (ton=C)
let me know if you need some other hints, hankir (and I'll give some wordplay for the acrosses shortly).
1 is an anag of M(aster) OF ROSET[ta - slang for 'thanks'] def 'first'
11 anag of SUCH COLD [around] 'fossil resin' = AMBER
28 is a tricky one -
The first two words are the def - then 'vacate' the next two words but put the notes [TIS] in the first pair of letters (the answer starts with the 'game' TIG).

Thanks PrfessorM.
Got all but 4d, 5d and 9d (just noticed) . What are the def?
A few more hints for the downs (it's getting quite late here) -

4 the 'hunter' = a horse and the (archaic) 'lie' is a common word you might associate with what untruth is [without its final 'e' for 'base'].
5 'a' is dialect for 'they'.
8 'spun' indicates a reversal.
22 'thrust = DIG

It's a great puzzle, hankir. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I am told dinner is ready,so will pick up after that.
More Qs tomorrow. It must be pretty late wherever you are.
5 def is 'for us in the country'('country' = dialect).

9 the def is ABC ('dead' = archaic) 'live' = BE around S(abbath) which comes after A(bout) - and it ends with Y (150 in medieval Roman numerals).
