The COP jamboree has made a decision to ban deforestation by 2030. Among the signatories are the USA and Canada and Drax gets the vast majority of its so-called "biomass" (i.e. freshly felled timber) from those two countries. Will there be an exception to the tree felling embargo to enable Drax to continue burning wood (in the same way as its emissions are excluded form the UK's total). Around 250 square miles (about half the area of Bedfordshire) of trees are felled each year to feed Drax. What will they burn there after 2030?

This whole ridiculous Drax charade must surely end now. You can't stand up and talk about re forestation when ship loads of trees are being hacked down every day to feed this ridiculous biomass cobras. That's where Greta and co should be the gates of drax!

Ah good old jno, nothing like a good bash of the British eh?

Why oh why do you live here? There must be a place better if we are all so bad.
Loss of British woodland is mainly down to those pesky Europeans.
1000+ years ago trees covered around 15% of the landmass. The Norman French then took over as landlords. Once they and the Angevins had faded, the Tudors needed Navy warships to subdue the French and Spanish which took a huge toll on that figure; burning wood for fuel was also popular causing tree numbers to dwindle further until a C16th alternative was found - coal.
After WW1 woodland was down to 5%, prompting formation of the Forestry Commission and a remit to plant new forests. The subsequent century has seen UK woodland more than double to around 13% coverage, very nearly a return to pre-Norman levels.

Perhaps they could convert it to burn face masks. Billions of em littering the planet.
Biomass power stations in the US add tar soaked railway sleepers, old shredded tyres and gas to the wood pellets to attain the necessary temperatures. Don't know what, if anything, Drax adds.
Seems it's just another con job from the GW conmen.
stupid answers on here by people who know nothing about power generation , yes drax is a polluter of c02 but you cant shut this massive station down with out getting the replacement power source in first to keep the million people so and factories going it providers power to; and dont for god sake say more wind turbines or usless solar panels (good in daylight only)

Why not? Plenty of coal fired power stations have been shut down without suitable replacements (...and dont for god sake say more wind turbines or usless solar panels (good in daylight only)).

I've seen no stupid answers on here at all. One or two flippant ones which are obviously not intended to be serious. One or two have hit the nail squarely on the head and recognised the hypocrisy that is involved with the massive confidence trick that the owners of Drax have managed to pull off. Of course alternative means of power production will have to be sought before Drax can close down as it is responsible for about 5% of the UK's electricity production. But it should never have been permitted to convert from coal to wood in the first place. Burning wood - especially when it has to be processed and transported 5,000 miles - must be about the most environmentally unfriendly way to mass-produce electricity imaginable. I note that the state governor of Louisiana visited Drax on his way to the Glasgow beanfeast. He has a vested interest as Drax is the largest (what is quaintly termed) "agricultural" importer by value from the US to the UK, and a critical international trade partner. I don't know when the felling of mature trees and processing them to be burnt fell under the term "agriculture" but the Governor (and Drax) may have to rethink their strategies if the embargo on tree felling extends to those felled to burn.
i agree new judge i was appalled it was going bio mass years ago ,its the fact some people on here actually suggesting the green idiots glue themselves to the road at drax,
btw Ferrybridge and Eggborough within spitting distance of Drax (1 coal burner and 1 bio mass) have not long since been demolished
piper107: ",its the fact some people on here actually suggesting the green idiots glue themselves to the road at drax, " - I suggested that and i would have more respect for the insulate mob if they did. Drax is massive con trick contributing to a problem we are all trying to solve. If ER/IB et al want to get any sort of public support they should stop hassling the public and start picking on disgusting con tricks like Drax.
