Where the fire back (open coal fire) meets the grate at the side there is a hole where the fire cement has fallen away inside.
The hole measures approx 6 inches long by 1 inch across.
When I try and fill the hole all the cement just disappears into the hole.
Solutions please!

What I would do is to use some non-inflammable material such as roof insulation or fibreglass to stick in the gap and then put the fireclay in afterwards.
